LaserCube Pro or Ultra MK2: Which One Should You Buy?

The Pro is a compact Ultra MK2. Compare size, laser power, battery, ports and outdoor use to pick the right LaserCube for your shows.

The LaserCube Pro and the LaserCube Ultra MK2 are our two professional models. They run the same software, take the same control signals and draw the same sharp graphics. The difference is size, laser power and a few ports. This guide puts them side by side so you can pick the one that fits your shows.

The Pro is sold outside the USA for now. It comes to the USA later; until then, the Ultra MK2 is the model for US buyers.

01

The short answer

The Pro is a compact Ultra MK2. The Pro 6W has the same laser output as the Ultra MK2 6W, in a smaller, lighter body. The Ultra MK2 10W is our most powerful model. For most buyers the choice comes down to budget: both suit audiences of up to about 1,000 people.

02

Side by side

  • Laser power: Pro 3W or 6W; Ultra MK2 6W or 10W.
  • Size and weight: Pro 13 × 13 × 13.5 cm, 2.5 kg; Ultra MK2 15.5 × 15 × 15.5 cm, 3.7 kg.
  • Battery: Pro 70 Wh, 2–3 hours, charges in about 3 hours; Ultra MK2 92 Wh, 3–4 hours, charges in about 4 hours.
  • Scan speed: both over 35,000 points per second at 7°, maximum scan angle over 37°.
  • DMX: Pro DMX In and Out on 3.5 mm jacks; Ultra MK2 full-size XLR DMX In and Out.
  • ILDA: Pro ILDA In; Ultra MK2 ILDA In and Out.
  • On both: Art-Net, audio in and out, USB MIDI, a screen running CubeOS, and shows from the microSD card without a computer.
  • Water and dust: Pro IP51 (its rain cover isn't available yet); Ultra MK2 IP51, IP63 with the rain cover fitted.
  • Audience: both up to about 1,000 people; for more, run several cubes in sync.
03

Size and weight

LaserCube Ultra MK2

The Pro is 37% smaller than the Ultra MK2 and weighs 2.5 kg against the Ultra MK2's 3.7 kg. If you carry your cube from gig to gig, or fit it into a small rig, that difference adds up. Both mount the same way: the bracket has lockable tilt and a central hole for an M8 or M10 bolt, so a truss clamp fits either one. Add a wire safety bond to the eye bolt on the back panel.

04

Laser power and picture

The Ultra MK2 10W puts out about 10,000 mW of full-color RGB light: 5,000 mW blue, 2,800 mW green and 2,800 mW red. The Ultra MK2 6W and the Pro 6W share the same output: 2,800 mW blue, 1,500 mW green and 1,800 mW red. The Pro 3W is the lighter entry into the pro range.

Both draw at over 35,000 points per second, and at full size both throw a picture about 0.7 times as wide as the distance: about 1.4 m wide at 2 m, and 14 m at 20 m. More power, a darker room and a little haze or fog make the beams much more visible.

05

Ports and control

Both run from the free LaserOS app on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and both take DMX, Art-Net, ILDA and USB MIDI. Both can also play shows from their microSD card with no computer connected.

The ports are where they differ:

  • The Ultra MK2 has full-size XLR DMX In and Out, so standard DMX cables plug straight in. The Pro uses 3.5 mm jacks for DMX; a standard 3.5 mm jack to XLR DMX adapter works (not included).
  • The Ultra MK2 has ILDA In and Out, the Pro ILDA In only. Either one works with Pangolin or any other ILDA DAC.

Most shows don't need the Ultra MK2's extra ports. If you are not sure, they are not the reason to choose it.

To link several cubes, both use Cube Link (wireless, about 20 to 40 m line of sight), Ethernet, Art-Net or DMX, and a Pro and an Ultra MK2 can run together.

06

Battery and power

The Ultra MK2's 92 Wh battery runs about 3 to 4 hours; the Pro's 70 Wh battery about 2 to 3 hours. Both charge while they play on their charger, so a longer show just needs a socket nearby.

07

Outdoor shows and rain

Both are made for outdoor shows. They are rated IP51, and IP63 with the rain cover fitted, which allows light rain but not heavy rain. The Ultra MK2's rain cover is sold on the gear page. The Pro's rain cover isn't available yet, so for now a Pro can't be used in rain. Both work between 10 °C and 40 °C (50 °F and 104 °F).

Outdoors, every beam must end on a solid surface such as a wall, a building or a screen, never in the open sky. For public shows, check your local rules.

08

What's in the box

Both come with a case, a 19V charger with a plug or cable for your country, an Ethernet cable, a USB-C to Ethernet adapter, a clamp adapter, a steel safety loop with a carabiner, spare keys, interlock jumpers and antennas. In the USA, the Ultra MK2 comes with an E-Stop instead of the jumper, and with the FDA variance issued by X-Laser.

09

Which one is right for you?

  • The Pro if you want our most advanced model in the smallest, lightest body, and 3W or 6W is enough for your shows.
  • The Ultra MK2 if you want the most light (10W), the longest battery, full-size XLR DMX or ILDA Out, or if you are in the USA.

Compare them with the WiFi models on the models page, and see the prices and combos for your country on the LaserCube page. New to lasers? Our free LaserCube Academy walks you from the box to your first show.

A word on safety

LaserCube is a professional show laser, not a toy: never aim it at people's eyes, at audiences or at aircraft, and never at anything flammable. Wherever people may be, keep every beam at least 3 meters above the ground, and never leave a running cube unattended. Our safety tips have more.

Frequently asked questions

Q01Is the Pro just a smaller Ultra MK2?

Yes, in short. The Pro 6W has the same laser output as the Ultra MK2 6W in a smaller, lighter body. The Ultra MK2 adds a 10W version, XLR DMX, ILDA Out and a bigger battery.

Q02Can I use a Pro and an Ultra MK2 together?

Yes. Link them with Cube Link, Ethernet, Art-Net or DMX.

Q03Do I need the Ultra MK2's ILDA Out or XLR DMX?

Most shows don't. The Pro's DMX works with a standard 3.5 mm jack to XLR adapter.

Q04Can I buy the Pro in the USA?

Not yet. It comes to the USA later; email support@laseros.com to be told when it's available. Until then, the Ultra MK2 is the model for US buyers.
